Humane’s AI Pin: A Story of Disappointment and Failure

What Happened?

In April 2024, Humane launched its AI Pin, a lapel pin with an integrated AI voice assistant, camera, speaker, and laser projector. The device was initially priced at $700, but it was later discounted to $500. However, it seems that the company’s journey with the AI Pin has come to an end.

The Shut Down

Humane has announced that it is shutting down and discontinuing the AI Pin. The device will stop connecting to the company’s servers, and all customer data, including personal identifiable information, will be permanently deleted from Humane’s servers. The company’s FAQ page states that the AI Pin will no longer function as a cellular device or connect to Humane’s servers, making it impossible for users to make calls, send texts, or access data.

The Refund Policy

But what about refunds? Unfortunately, most customers won’t be getting one. According to Humane’s FAQ page, only those who are still within the 90-day return window from their original shipment date are eligible for refunds. All device shipments prior to November 15th, 2024, are not eligible for refunds. Refunds must be submitted by February 27th, 2025.

The Sale of Assets

Despite its failure with the AI Pin, Humane is selling off its key assets, including the AI Pin’s CosmOS operating system and intellectual property, including over 300 patents and patent applications, to HP for $116 million. The acquisition is expected to close this month.

The Rise and Fall of Humane

Humane raised $241 million to make its pin and was reportedly valued at $1 billion before launch. Last year, the company was seeking a sale price of $750 million to $1 billion. However, it seems that the company’s inability to deliver on its promises has led to its downfall.

FAQs

* What happened to the AI Pin? The device will no longer connect to Humane’s servers, and all customer data will be permanently deleted.
* Will I get a refund? Only those who are within the 90-day return window from their original shipment date are eligible for refunds.
* Can I port my phone number to another device or wireless carrier? No, the AI Pin will not allow this.
* Will any features still work offline? Yes, some features like battery level will still work, but the device will become e-waste for most owners.

Conclusion

The story of Humane’s AI Pin is one of disappointment and failure. Despite its promising start, the company’s inability to deliver a functional product and poor treatment of its customers have led to its downfall. As we say goodbye to the AI Pin, it serves as a reminder of the importance of delivering on promises and treating customers with respect.
