Introduction to Veo 2

Google has announced the rollout of Veo 2, a new AI model for the Gemini app and website. This model is not just a chatbot, but a video generator that allows paying customers to create short video clips using Google’s state-of-the-art technology.

How Veo 2 Works

Veo 2 works similarly to other video generators, such as OpenAI’s Sora. Users input text describing the video they want to create, and a Google data center processes the tokens to generate an animation. According to Google, Veo 2 has a solid grasp of real-world physics, particularly the way humans move. The company has provided examples of the model’s capabilities, which appear to be impressive.

Features of Veo 2

Veo 2 will be available in the model drop-down menu, although Google notes that the location may change as the company considers ways to integrate this feature. The rollout has started, but it may take several weeks for all Gemini Advanced subscribers to gain access to Veo 2. When available, users can provide as much detail as they want to ensure fine control over the eventual video.

Video Generation Limitations

Veo 2 is currently limited to generating 8 seconds of 720p video, which can be downloaded as a standard MP4 file. Due to the high processing requirements of video generation, Google has implemented a monthly limit. Although the company has not confirmed what this limit is, users will be notified as they approach it.

Using Veo 2

To use Veo 2, users can simply input a prompt describing the video they want to create. For example, a prompt might read: "Aerial shot of a grassy cliff onto a sandy beach where waves crash against the shore, a prominent sea stack rises from the ocean near the beach, bathed in the warm, golden light of either sunrise or sunset, capturing the serene beauty of the Pacific coastline." The level of detail provided will determine the quality and accuracy of the generated video.

Conclusion

The introduction of Veo 2 to the Gemini app and website marks a significant development in AI-generated video technology. With its ability to create short, high-quality video clips, Veo 2 has the potential to revolutionize the way we create and consume video content. As the rollout continues, we can expect to see more examples of what this technology is capable of.
