Artificial Intelligence in Cybersecurity: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

The Rise of Artificial Intelligence in Cyber Attacks

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used by cybercriminals to evade business security measures, with 59% of respondents in a survey from cybersecurity specialists Integrity360 agreeing that AI is increasing the frequency of attacks.

The Dark Side of AI: A Threat to Businesses

AI is being used to generate malware and create authentic-looking phishing emails that mimic the target company’s language, tone, and design. This is a growing concern for tech leaders, with 61% expressing apprehension over the increase in AI-powered attacks.

War of the AI Algorithms: The Next Evolution of Cyber Attacks

"As AI technologies continue to evolve, their integration into cyber security will follow. Organisations must remain proactive in embracing AI while also addressing the challenges it presents, ensuring that their cyber security defences keep pace," said Brian Martin, head of product development, innovation, and strategy at Integrity360.

The Future of Cybersecurity: A Concern for Businesses

The use of AI for cyber attacks is already a threat to businesses, but recognizing the future potential and the impact it can have is just the start. The potential for deepfake technology, as seen in the video of Volodymyr Zelenskyy telling Ukrainians to put down their weapons and spreading disinformation, is a disturbing example of the nefarious means in which it can be used. Businesses need to be prepared for how to defend against this and discern what is and isn’t real to avoid falling victim to an attack.

C-Suite Communication on Security

A significant gap remains in many businesses’ communication and education on the cybersecurity strategy, especially among the C-Suite. While nearly half (46%) disagreed that they lacked understanding of the impact of AI on cybersecurity, CIOs were found to have the least understanding, with 42% indicating disagreement.

The Benefits of AI in Cybersecurity

On the other hand, 73% of respondents said that AI is becoming an increasingly important tool for security operations and incident response, with the possibility of decreasing strain on security staff in mind. AI is also improving the speed and accuracy of incident response, with 71% agreeing that it is improving the efficiency of cyber security operations.

Conclusion

As AI technologies continue to evolve, their integration into cyber security will follow. Organisations must remain proactive in embracing AI while also addressing the challenges it presents, ensuring that their cyber security defences keep pace.
