Introduction to Empire Behavior

The concept of empires has been around for centuries, and it’s surprising to see how it still applies to modern-day tech companies. One of the key features of empires is that they monopolize resources, labor, and knowledge production. In the case of the AI industry, we’ve seen a significant shift of AI researchers from universities and independent institutions to working for tech giants. This has resulted in a lack of diverse perspectives and a clear picture of the limitations and potential drawbacks of these technologies.

Monopolizing Knowledge Production

The AI industry has been monopolizing more and more of the world’s AI researchers over the past decade. This means that instead of contributing to open science and working in universities or independent institutions, many researchers are now working for tech companies. The effect of this is that we’re not getting a clear picture of the limitations of these technologies or if there are better ways to develop them. It’s similar to what would happen if most climate scientists were being funded by oil and gas companies – we wouldn’t be getting an unbiased view of the situation.

Aggressive Race Rhetoric

Another feature of empires is that they engage in aggressive race rhetoric, where there are "good" empires and "evil" empires. The "good" empire needs to be strong enough to beat back the "evil" empire, and this is used as a justification for consuming all resources and exploiting labor. If the "evil" empire gets the technology first, humanity is doomed, but if the "good" empire gets it first, they’ll civilize the world and bring about a utopia. This kind of rhetoric is used to create a sense of urgency and justify the means by which these companies operate.

The Role of AGI

AGI, or Artificial General Intelligence, is a concept that has been looming over the AI industry. It’s the idea of creating a machine that can fully replicate human intelligence. However, there’s no consensus on what AGI actually means or if it’s even possible. A recent survey of long-standing AI researchers found that 75% of them don’t think we have the techniques yet to reach AGI. The definition of AGI is also constantly shifting, depending on what the company wants to achieve. This lack of clarity creates a kind of quasi-religious fervor around the concept, where people feel like they need to keep driving towards this goal, no matter what.

The Impact of AGI on the AI Industry

The concept of AGI serves as a kind of holy grail for the AI industry. It’s what drives companies like OpenAI to keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. However, this focus on AGI can also be limiting, as it creates a narrow definition of what success looks like. It’s also worth noting that AGI is not an inevitable fact – it’s not even clear if it’s possible or what it would look like if we got there.

Conclusion

The concept of empires is still relevant today, and it’s surprising to see how it applies to modern-day tech companies. The AI industry is a prime example of this, with companies like OpenAI monopolizing resources, labor, and knowledge production. The aggressive race rhetoric and focus on AGI create a sense of urgency and justify the means by which these companies operate. However, it’s worth taking a step back and considering the potential drawbacks of this approach and whether it’s really the best way to achieve our goals.
