Introduction to AI in Government

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in government has been a topic of discussion in recent times. Oren Etzioni, a expert in the field, has expressed his concerns about the government being on the "bleeding edge" of AI technology. According to Etzioni, the government should not be experimenting with cutting-edge AI if corporations have not yet adopted it.

The Role of AI in Job Replacement

Etzioni also believes that AI agents are not a good fit for replacing human jobs. While AI can perform certain tasks or make others more efficient, it is not capable of doing the jobs of 70,000 employees. He states that this idea is "not possible" unless one is using "funny math".

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)

A recruiter named Jancso was identified as one of the earliest recruiters for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Jancso used the Palantir alumni group to recruit members for DOGE, which aims to build an efficient government and cut the federal budget by one-third. Palantir, a company co-founded by Peter Thiel, has close ties to Elon Musk and has received billions of dollars in government contracts.

Palantir’s Involvement with the Government

Palantir has been involved in several government projects, including building a "mega API" to connect data from the Internal Revenue Service to other government agencies. The company is also working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to create a massive surveillance platform to identify immigrants for deportation.

Concerns about AI in Government

The use of AI in government raises several concerns. Etzioni’s comments highlight the need for caution when implementing AI technology in government. The involvement of companies like Palantir, which has close ties to the government and has received significant contracts, also raises questions about the role of private companies in shaping government policy.

CEEDED Expectations

It is clear that the government’s expectations for AI are high, but the reality is that AI is not yet ready to replace human jobs. The idea that AI can cut the federal budget by one-third is also unlikely. As Etzioni states, "no way" can AI replace the jobs of 70,000 employees unless one is using "funny math".

Conclusion

The use of AI in government is a complex issue that requires careful consideration. While AI has the potential to make certain tasks more efficient, it is not yet ready to replace human jobs. The involvement of private companies like Palantir also raises concerns about the role of government in regulating AI technology. As the government continues to explore the use of AI, it is essential to approach this technology with caution and consider the potential consequences.
