Broadcom’s "Jericho 4" StrataDNX switch/router chips offer 51.2 Tb/sec of aggregate bandwidth, while Nvidia’s Spectrum-XGS scale-across network provides a notably cheeky name, given that Broadcom’s "Trident" and "Tomahawk" switch ASICs belong to the StrataXGS family.

Why Traditional Routers Fall Short

AI workloads behave differently from typical data centre traffic, generating massive, bursty traffic patterns. Traditional routing equipment wasn’t designed for this and typically prioritizes either raw speed or sophisticated traffic management, but struggles to deliver both simultaneously while maintaining reasonable power consumption. For AI data centre interconnect applications, organizations need all three: speed, intelligent buffering, and efficiency.

Cisco’s Answer: The 8223 System

The 8223 system represents a departure from general-purpose routing equipment, delivering 64 ports of 800-gigabit connectivity and processing over 20 billion packets per second. The system’s distinguishing feature is its deep buffering capability, enabled by the P200 chip, which absorbs traffic surges, preventing network congestion. Power efficiency is another critical advantage, with the 8223 achieving "switch-like power efficiency" while maintaining routing capabilities.

Major hyperscalers are already deploying this technology, with Microsoft and Alibaba Cloud finding value in the Silicon One architecture. The 8223’s flexibility in deployment options could prove decisive as organizations seek to avoid vendor lock-in while building out distributed AI infrastructure.
