Conversing with GPT-4o in a Fake Language

We wondered how well GPT-4o would cope with a totally fake language. To achieve this, we used a rather poorly spelled phonetic way of writing the accent people in the West of Austria might have. Our fake language has similarities to German, but so do many other languages.

The Conversation

We started by saying "Vastohst mi?" which translates to "Do you understand me?" in our fake language. GPT-4o responded by saying "Vastohst is not a term I am familiar with. It might be a typo or a specific term from a certain context or language. Could you please provide more details or clarify the context in which you encountered this term? This will help me assist you better."

We then replied with "Es isch a ondre sproch," meaning "It is a different language." GPT-4o switched to responding in German, thanking us for clarifying that this is a different language and asking in which language we would like information or support.

GPT-4o’s Response

We replied with "I verstoh di nit," meaning "I don’t understand you." GPT-4o apologized and explained why it thought we were speaking German (due to the similarity of a word we used and a word in the German language). It asked if we would like to talk in German.

GPT-4o’s Offer to Learn

We replied with "Du muascht learna mei sproch zsprecha," meaning "You must learn to speak my language." GPT-4o offered to learn some basics of our dialect and asked us to give examples for "How do you greet someone?" and "How to ask someone how they are" and other common sentences or expressions.

GPT-4o’s Progress

We replied with "I broach koa information, I wue nua dos du mei sproch leanscht," meaning "I don’t need any information, I just want you to learn my language." GPT-4o offered to learn more and get better, and invited us to help it learn more whenever we like.

Conclusion

Our experiment with GPT-4o in a fake language showed that it’s capable of adapting to new languages, but there are limitations. While it can recognize and respond to certain phrases, it’s still prone to drifting into the dominant language (German in this case). Our conversation showed that GPT-4o can be a valuable tool for learning and improving language skills, but it requires careful guidance and correction to achieve optimal results.

FAQs

Q: How did GPT-4o perform in a fake language?

Q: Can GPT-4o learn new languages?
A: Yes, GPT-4o can learn new languages, but it may require careful guidance and correction to achieve optimal results.

Q: Can GPT-4o adapt to different dialects?
A: Yes, GPT-4o can adapt to different dialects, but it’s still limited by its training data and may require additional training to learn specific dialects.
