Introduction to the Issue

AI language models are becoming increasingly popular, and they can produce believable fiction. However, this can be a problem when it comes to accuracy. These models produce statistical approximations based on patterns they learned during training, which can lead to confident-sounding misinformation. Even when they can search the web for real sources, they can still fabricate citations, choose the wrong ones, or mischaracterize them.

The Problem with Fake Citations

The presence of potentially AI-generated fake citations in a report is especially concerning. This report had 110 recommendations, including one that stated the provincial government should provide learners and educators with essential AI knowledge, including ethics, data privacy, and responsible technology use. However, the report itself contained multiple fabricated citations. Sarah Martin, a Memorial political science professor, spent days reviewing the document and discovered several fake citations. "Around the references I cannot find, I can’t imagine another explanation," she said.

Reaction to the Issue

When contacted about the issue, co-chair Karen Goodnough declined an interview request, stating that they were investigating and checking references. The Department of Education and Early Childhood Development acknowledged awareness of "a small number of potential errors in citations" and stated that the online report would be updated to rectify any errors. Josh Lepawsky, the former president of the Memorial University Faculty Association, resigned from the report’s advisory board in January, citing a "deeply flawed process." He stated that "errors happen," but made-up citations are a different thing that can demolish the trustworthiness of the material.

The Impact of Fake Citations

The presence of fake citations in a report can have serious consequences. It can undermine the credibility of the report and the individuals involved in its creation. It can also lead to misinformation and poor decision-making. In this case, the report was meant to inform educational policy, making the presence of fake citations especially troubling.

Conclusion

The issue of AI-generated fake citations is a serious one that can have significant consequences. It highlights the need for careful review and fact-checking, especially when it comes to important documents like reports. It also underscores the importance of teaching learners and educators about AI ethics, data privacy, and responsible technology use. By being aware of the potential for fake citations and taking steps to prevent them, we can ensure that our information is accurate and trustworthy.
