Introduction to Gemini 2.5 Flash

Google has recently made significant updates to its Gemini model, particularly with the release of Gemini 2.5 Flash. This update aims to improve the model’s performance by introducing "dynamic and controllable reasoning." According to Tulsee Doshi from Google, the previous 2.5 Pro (Experimental) release was prone to "overthinking" simple queries, but the new release is designed to address this issue.

Key Features of Gemini 2.5 Flash

The newest Gemini models will now choose a "thinking budget" based on the complexity of the prompt, which helps reduce wait times and processing for 2.5 Flash. Developers also get granular control over the budget, allowing them to lower costs and speed up the process where necessary. Additionally, Gemini 2.5 models will receive supervised tuning and context caching for Vertex AI in the coming weeks.

Gemini 2.5 Pro Powers Deep Research Tool

The larger Pro model has also been updated and is now powering Google’s Deep Research tool, which was previously running Gemini 2.0 Pro. Deep Research allows users to explore a topic in greater detail by entering a prompt, and the agent collects data and synthesizes a lengthy report. The move to Gemini 2.5 has reportedly boosted the accuracy and usefulness of Deep Research.

Comparison with OpenAI

According to Google, the new Gemini 2.5 Pro model has a greater than 2-to-1 preference over OpenAI’s deep research tool based on user evaluations. This suggests that Google’s updates have significantly improved the performance of its model.

Availability and Future Plans

Deep Research is currently available for limited use on non-paid accounts, but users won’t have access to the latest model. Deep Research with 2.5 Pro is limited to Gemini Advanced subscribers. However, it is expected that all models in the Gemini app will soon move to the 2.5 branch, potentially lowering the costs associated with generative AI.

Conclusion

The release of Gemini 2.5 Flash marks a significant improvement in Google’s Gemini model, with features such as dynamic and controllable reasoning, supervised tuning, and context caching. The updated model has already shown promising results, particularly in powering the Deep Research tool. As the technology continues to evolve, we can expect to see more advancements in the field of generative AI.
