Introduction to Manufacturing

Manufacturing is the engine of society and the backbone of robust, resilient economies. John Hart, head of MIT’s Department of Mechanical Engineering and faculty co-director of the MIT Initiative for New Manufacturing (INM), emphasizes the importance of manufacturing to innovation, economic and national security, and daily lives.

The MIT Initiative for New Manufacturing

Launched in May, INM aims to transform manufacturing through new technology, talent development, and understanding of how to scale manufacturing for higher productivity and resilience. The initiative builds on the successful three-year-old Manufacturing@MIT program and is one of MIT’s strategic initiatives. INM’s faculty co-directors include Institute Professor Suzanne Berger and Chris Love, professor of chemical engineering.

Four Main Themes

The initiative is pursuing four main themes:

  • Reimagining manufacturing technologies and systems
  • Elevating the productivity and human experience of manufacturing
  • Scaling up new manufacturing
  • Transforming the manufacturing base

Industry Collaboration

INM has an industry consortium with founding members including Amgen, Autodesk, Flex, GE Vernova, PTC, Sanofi, and Siemens. These industry partners will work closely with MIT faculty, researchers, and students on manufacturing-related research. The collaboration will focus on the deployment and adoption of AI and automation in manufacturing, including seed research projects, collaborative case studies, and shared strategy development.

Education and Workforce Training

INM will also concentrate on education for all professions in manufacturing, with alliances between corporations, community colleges, government agencies, and other partners. The initiative will scale its curriculum to broader audiences, from aspiring manufacturing workers to engineers and executives. Industry partners will engage directly with students, providing opportunities for collaboration and workforce development.

Focus on the United States

INM is a global project with a particular focus on the United States, which remains the world’s second-largest manufacturing economy. The initiative aims to reverse the decline in manufacturing employment and innovation in the US through advocacy, education programs, and buy-in from industry, government, and academia.

The Role of Technology

Technology is a key enabler for expanding the US manufacturing base. AI and automation offer new accelerated ways to develop, deploy, and monitor production processes, presenting a huge opportunity and, in some cases, a necessity. Digital technology gives manufacturers an opportunity to leapfrog competitors, which is very powerful for the US and any company or country aiming to create differentiated capabilities.

Conclusion

The MIT Initiative for New Manufacturing is a strategic initiative that aims to transform manufacturing through new technology, talent development, and understanding of how to scale manufacturing. With a focus on the United States and a global perspective, INM is well-positioned to create impact and drive innovation in the manufacturing ecosystem. By convening stakeholders and exploring breakthrough ideas in research, INM can help create a robust and resilient manufacturing base for the future.
